Ear - Non Hearing

Please visit the Tinnitus and/or Hearing quiz for those conditions. This quiz is only for conditions that may be caused by Tinnitus or Hearing loss.

Veterans Affairs rates these conditions when a claim is filed and service connection is established (meaning you show the condition is related to your military service). The ratings are based on the severity and frequency of symptoms, not a set schedule like “every year.”

Vertigo (Peripheral Vestibular Disorders)

The VA rates vertigo not as a standalone condition but under vestibular disorders (Diagnostic Code 6204). Ratings depend on how severe and frequent your symptoms are.

Menière’s Disease

Menière’s disease (a specific inner ear disorder that includes vertigo, hearing loss, and balance issues) is rated under Diagnostic Code 6205. The VA assigns a rating based on how often severe symptoms occur.

These ratings are decided during the claims process and can be reevaluated if symptoms change.

Other Ear Conditions

Other ear problems (such as chronic infections, hearing loss, or tinnitus) can also be rated under other diagnostic codes in 38 CFR § 4.87 (Schedule of Ratings – Ear). Each has its own criteria focusing on severity and impact on hearing or balance.
