How the VA Rates Tinnitus (38 CFR § 4.87, DC 6260)

The VA assigns a single disability rating for recurrent tinnitus under Diagnostic Code 6260. Tinnitus is defined as the perception of sound (such as ringing, buzzing, hissing, or roaring) in the absence of an external source. If the condition is service-connected and recurrent, the VA assigns a maximum 10% rating, regardless of whether the sound is heard in one ear, both ears, or in the head. The VA does not assign separate ratings for each ear. Because 10% is the highest schedular rating available for tinnitus, veterans seeking higher compensation must show additional service-connected conditions or pursue extraschedular consideration if symptoms create exceptional impairment.

How the VA Rates Hearing Loss (38 CFR § 4.85–4.86, DC 6100)

The VA evaluates hearing loss using a mechanical formula based on controlled audiological testing. Ratings are determined by combining results from:

1. A Maryland CNC speech discrimination test, and
2.  A puretone audiometry test measuring hearing thresholds at 1000, 2000, 3000, and 4000 Hz.

The average puretone threshold and speech discrimination score are applied to VA rating tables (Table VI or VIa, when applicable), which assign a Roman numeral level (I through XI) for each ear. Those levels are then combined using Table VII to determine a disability percentage ranging from 0% to 100%. Many veterans qualify for service connection at 0%, meaning the condition is recognized but does not meet the threshold for monthly compensation. Special provisions exist for “exceptional patterns of hearing impairment,” which may allow alternate table use when certain decibel thresholds are met. Hearing aids improve your hearing and may reduce your rating.
